HAIL OF BULLETS - … OF FROST AND WAR
(Metal Blade)
Old school death metal seems to be making a come back, which is good enough for me considering I’m not too fond of modern, technical DM. There seems to be no end to these ultra-clinical, computer-perfect bands popping up these days. Where’s the feedback? Where’s the murkiness? Where’s the ok-we’re-playing-too-fast-for-our-own-good-let’s-slow-it-down-to-a-crawl-the-way-Autopsy-did deal?
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Holland’s Hail of Bullets. Featuring members from Pestilence, Asphyx, Thanatos and Houwitser who got together one day for their love of old school DM and formed this Dutch super-group. With one foot firmly in the past and the other one on your neck HOB have produced, with a little help from Dan Swano, a stunning album that will remind the listener of the aforementioned Autopsy, Bolt Thrower, early Death and Entombed, and having a fucking great time about it, too.
Lyrically, this is a concept album of sorts, based on the German/Soviet conflict of World War II. Musically you get what it’s said on the tin; one minute they can be blasting like the best of them, the next they’ve grinded it to a crawl, with riffs echoing like the Nebelwerfer rocket launcher. If you are familiar with Pestilence then vocalist Martin Van Drunen needs no introduction – his vocals is more of a hoarse growl than downright guttural, and is perhaps one of the finest singers in metal today.
Stand-out tracks? There’s a bullet belt of them: Advancing Once More, Ordered Eastward, Insanity Commands, Inferno at the Carpathian Mountains … classics in the making, all.
This album has taken a lot of people by surprise, and with luck should herald the next wave in old school DM. Essential.
