Albums by reformed classic metal bands (Megadeth, Iron Maiden, etc) present a big challenge for the original songwriters to come up with songs that somewhat approach the musical zenith of their younger days: Ok, you've reunited, now, can you create something worth remembering?
Judas Priest is famous for Rob Halford's prodigious vocal range, dual guitar onslaught and their great songs; sadly a good part of Rob's upper vocal range is gone, but the man can still deliver great singing with plenty of power and presence. The dual guitar attack is still there, with Glen Tipton and K.K. Downing showing they've picked up a few modern metal sounds and tricks along the way, and don't forget Scott Travis, technically, the best JP drummer since Simon Wright.
Angel Of Retribution is supposed to be the continuation of their (arguably best) second album Sad Wings of Destiny, and while the production is great and the songs are good, there are no metal masterpieces like Victim of Changes, Genocide, Tyrant and other songs that put Judas Priest in the metal map.
Nevertheless, for any classic metal and JP fans, this very enjoyable album, worthy of ownership, does deliver some great songs that belong in their live repertoire, like Hellrider and Judas Rising.
The Priest is indeed back. |
