DEICIDE – SCARS OF THE CRUCIFIX (EARACHE RECORDS)
Having finally brushed off the creativity-drowning contract of Road(trend)runner records, Florida’s evilest were snatched up by the UK’s Earache record and haven’t looked back since. Seeing this as a ‘come-back’ record – the band confessed to rushing their previous few albums to escape the shackles of Road(trend)runner records – Deicide have returned with demonic wings out-stretched and bellowing for all the world to see.
Produced by the band and Neil Kernon (well, even that is debatable) SOTC is a superior slab of US death metal from masters of the genre that, with backing from a professional label should propel Deicide into more stereos the planet over. They even sound rejuvenated – songs such as ‘Conquered by Sodom’ and ‘Enchanted Nightmare’, not to mention the blistering title track are possibly the best material Deicide has written in a decade.
If I have one gripe it's this: as in other Deicide records, the album is too fucking short. 9 songs all under 30 minutes. The quality vs. quantity arguement gets lost here. I would love to see Deicide write an Iron Maiden type-epic some 10 minutes long.
Nevertheless, as it stands, 'Scars of the Crucifix' rocks.
