TODAY IS THE DAY – KISS THE PIG (RELAPSE RECORDS)
Relapse records boast some of the more extreme bands in the scene today; Pig Destroyer, Suffocation, Nile and Today is the Day, to name but a few. TITD certainly deserve this title – their in-your-face attitude and tumultuous racket is enough to start a riot at a kindergarten.
‘Kiss the Pig’ (the title is taken from an incident when guitarist/vocalist/main man Steve Austin, although living in an anti-Capitalism/anti-Bush/pro-NRA home in Texas, kissed his son’s piggy bank when asked to and realized that we all have to ‘kiss the pig’ sometime) is a no-compromise noise-fest that, attitude wise if not (quite) musically reminds this review of ‘Scum’-era Napalm Death. Songs such as ‘Mother’s Ruin’, ‘Why they Hate Us’, or the ferocious ‘This Machine Kills Fascists’ is the sound of pissed off blue-collar Joe’s (who just so happen to be heavily armed to boot.) Indeed, one look of the photos contained within the CD booklet will have you questioning Austin’s beliefs and motivations. However, as he stated in a recent interview: “You can be pro-gun and be absolutely pro-peace at the same time. If John Lennon played music in 2004, and played heavy shit, this would be the album that he would have made to explain things to people…”
While Lennon-purists the world over will no doubt question Austin’s claim, this one fact remains: the music. It’s mean, ugly and almost Punk in its convictions, and though Dio fans won’t be rushing out to buy it in their droves, Today is the Day, like death and taxes, isn’t going anywhere anytime soon...
