KEELHAUL – SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE (HYDRA HEAD RECORDS)
What do you get when you cross the groovieness of Clutch, the jazz-like hardcore of The Dillinger Escape Plan and the musical diversity of Dream Theatre? You get a band called Keelhaul, and these guys rock.
On first listen they are simply impossible to get your head around, it’s as if they don’t know what they’re doing and you don’t know what you’re listening to. But now and then there are riffs that jump from the speakers at you, riffs so gigantic that you simply sit there astonished, feeling as if you’re in the presence of something phenomenal.
There are hardly any vocals here, odds and ends, and splashes throughout; on the contorted Shackleton vocals are screamed relentlessly, but what they mean is anyone’s guess. The music is superb, from the barrage of riffs from Cruel Shoes, to the peculiarly titled Carl vs. the 10,000 lb Shadow, to the almost all-out-rock anthem of Tits of War (no, I’m not making this up.) Subject … is one of those annoying yet rewarding albums that forces you to pay attention, like a demanding infant you can’t ignore. It tends to ease up now and then, the soothing HMG allowing you some breathing room before the fucking starts up again.
If you want to push your musical scope to its limits, then I can’t recommend Keelhaul highly enough. This is a complex release from a complex yet highly talented band, i.e. Voivod fans will more than likely ‘get it’. Others, however, may be left wondering just what the hell happened to them.

Nice post-punk / metal instrumental music, not too complex, not too laidback, just right.
Think Neurosis meets Spiritual Beggars
