WOLF – EVIL STAR (MASSACRE/NO FASHION RECORDS)
Now this is a rare treat. Sweden’s Wolf is one of those bands who play ordinary, simplistic, back-to-basics Heavy Metal. Sure, you say, but which type of Metal? Heavy Metal, as in NWOBHM. These Swedes are so out of place in a world of Black/Death/Thrash/Nu Metal that they are a breath of fresh air for those who still crave early Maiden and Priest. In fact, it’s Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Merciful Fate that rock Wolf’s world, and listening to Evil Star it’s easy to see the influences all over this record. Close your eyes and you’d swear you were listening to Maiden on the short instrumental Transylvanian Twilight.
The denim an’ patches clad trio of Niklas Olsson, vocals/guitar, Mikael Goding, bass, and Daniel Bergkviest, on drums, are flying the flag of traditional Metal high, with such fist-banging anthems as The Avenger, Wolf’s Blood and the sing-along title track. It’s gorgeously produced, and with most of the tracks over the 5-minute mark Wolf are definitely giving you your money’s worth.
Wolf – howling good stuff!
