SUFFOCATION – SOULS TO DENY (RELAPSE RECORDS)
After six years in limbo of watching the genre that they helped to create and shape in their twisted image, Suffocation, those ferocious champions of Death Metal have returned with one the most powerful come-back albums to date. Hats off to Relapse for snatching up this influential US five-piece and giving them the push they so rightly deserve.
Souls to Deny had a hell of a lot to prove, for Suffocation were considered by metal extremists as the cream-de la-cream of Death Metal, and nothing short of a devastating tornado of an album would suffice. Thankfully, Suffocation not only delivers - this album sounds incredible and is very, very heavy – but their technical trademark riffs are all over this album; witness Surgery of Impalement, the amazing Immortally Condemned, or the blistering first track, Deceit, with its crushing intro.
However, you can’t please all the people all the time. Some media critics have questioned Souls to Deny, saying it’s not the come-back album that they were expecting. Still, it’s what you and I think, right, ‘cos the fan’s reaction to this record has been overwhelming positive. I’m a fan first, so-called critic second, and I say this album rocks. End of the day, Souls … is a true and welcome return to form from one of Death Metal’s elite.
