GRIP INC. – INCORPORATED (SPV RECORDS)
The highly underrated Grip Inc. return to the fold after a 4-year hiatus with the scorching ‘Incorporated’, and the wait has surely been worth it. This album brims with intricate, sonically-fuelled Metal anthems from one of the more misunderstood yet talented bands playing in the circuit today.
Album opener ‘Curse (Of the Cloth)’ bursts from the speaker in a furious flurry of frantic drumming from Dave Lombardo, who once more stamps his mark, proclaiming that he is still the best in the genre, period. And then; silence, as the tracks squirms and worms its way into your skull, the lyrics ‘Welcome to my House of Sadness’ a heart-wrenching wail from vocalist Gus Chambers, before the song suddenly crashes into a Thrash Metal barrage not heard since 1986.
Yet ‘Incorporated’ is not solely an album of old-school Thrash, on the contrary, there are hidden, cultural depths within that, on repeated listens is a pleasure to discover. Take ‘Prophecy’, for example, which has an almost Russian Cold War propaganda anthem feel to it, or ‘Enemy Mind’, with a Latin flavor flowing throughout the song. Credit must surely go to German Waldemar Sorychta, who plays bass and all guitars on this record. This guy is simply an incredibly talented musician.
‘Incorporated’ features a batch of guest musicians too, from Lisa D. Robin of She Devil to Apocalyptic cellist Eicca Toppinen, who contributes some haunting playing on ‘(Built to) Resist’. One of my personal favorites is ‘Privilege’, which features some outstanding drumming, not to mention boasting an eerie melody that demands to be hummed. And album closer/highlight ‘Man with NO Insides’ is just plain strange, oozing full of Mekong Delta-influences that wouldn’t be out of place from Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’.
Unfortunately, because Lombardo is busy recording and will undoubtedly tour with a little-known band called Slayer, it will be tough for Grip Inc. to take ‘Incorporated’ onto the road. Unless, perhaps, Lombardo can persuade Kerry King to take Grip Inc. out with them – now what a bill that would be.
